The Taupō Winter Festival returns with an exciting programme of events including live entertainment, food and wine experiences, workshops, family activities, arts and culture. With events spread throughout the district, there's something for every age and interest. Highlights include unique experiences such as Liquor & Literature, live performances, community events, and winter-themed celebrations.
School Holiday Adventures
July school holidays are the perfect time to visit Taupō. Explore geothermal parks, walk to Huka Falls, cruise on Lake Taupō, or challenge the family to an escape room adventure. Indoor activities are especially popular during winter, making it a great time to experience Taupō's attractions while staying warm. Taupō Marathon & Half Marathon
1 August 2026
One of New Zealand's most iconic running events returns to the shores of Lake Taupō. Whether you're tackling the full marathon, half marathon, or supporting friends and family from the sidelines, the atmosphere around town is always electric.
Live Entertainment at the Great Lake Centre
Throughout August, the Great Lake Centre hosts a variety of performances, concerts, and touring acts. One notable event this year is acclaimed Australian guitarist Daniel Champagne performing on 5 August. Keep an eye on local event listings for additional shows throughout the month.
Winter Escapes
August is one of the best times to enjoy Taupō's famous hot pools, lakeside cafés, scenic walks and geothermal attractions. It's also a fantastic base for day trips to nearby ski fields and mountain adventures.

NZ Junior Rugby Festival
17 – 20 September 2026
Thousands of players, coaches and families will descend on Taupō for one of New Zealand's largest junior rugby festivals. The event brings incredible energy to the town and creates a fantastic atmosphere across the district.
Outdoor Adventures Return
September marks the start of spring, making it an ideal time to get outdoors. Walking tracks burst back into life, bike trails become increasingly popular, and Lake Taupō starts attracting more visitors enjoying water-based activities.
